Jakob Thorkild Overgaard is an artist and composer working with sound, improvisation, electronics, composition, writing and visual research.
His work begins with observations of the world around him — historically, socially, politically, technologically, and through the conditions of individual existence.
At the centre of his practice is the translation of observations, considerations and hypotheses into sound and other forms of artistic experience.
Music is therefore not an isolated medium, but a way of investigating perception, experience and contemporary life.
His practice moves between improvisation, electronic and composed music, interdisciplinary projects, writing, teaching and visual research. Across these different forms, he is interested in the relationship between sound and perception, between the organic and the technological, and between individual experience and the wider cultural conditions that shape it.

His current long-term project, Complexio Oppositorum (2020–2030), continues this investigation through music, research and reflection on the increasingly intertwined relationship between digital experience and lived experience.
Overgaard has released numerous albums in the field of experimental music and has collaborated across improvisation, contemporary composition and interdisciplinary performance. He is also the author of books, essays and critical writings on music and teaches and lectures on music, listening and contemporary artistic practice.
